THE NATURE GARDEN

The foundations of the Nature Garden have now been completed and we''re into the final stages.

We''re extremely grateful to Dean Peckett (Superintendent at RHS Harlow Carr) who has helped us with the final design of the garden.

Dean has also offered us ''hands-on'' help.   We look forward to a team from Harlow Carr arriving April/May time.

In the centre of the plan is a ''Gathering Circle'', for story or teaching time.  The pink area is to be a wildflower meadow.  The Harlow Carr team will prepare the ground for us and the children will sow annual wildflower seeds.  The green area is for grasses (miscanthus) which will provide a lovely rustling noise.  The blue area is to be a grove of cornus, sarcococca and skimmia.   All the plants have been chosen to attract / support wildlife and to provide year round interest and colour.

The white area on the left of the plan is for wild grass and nettles - a habitat for butterflies and moths.

In January we planted a native hedge around the edge of the nature garden.

Eventually the hedge will provide a wonderful habitat for birds and mini- beasts.

Then the children mulched the hedge.

We''ve bought shrubs and grasses, wildflower plug plants and seed.

We have a pile of logs at the bottom of the garden (beetle and insect habitat) which Dean and his team are going to transform into a ''Log-ness Monster''

Dean and his team arrived to construct a Log-ness Monster (a beetle and insect habitat).

The children sowed wild flower seeds and planted wild flower plug plants.

The nature garden is looking good.

RHS team planted shrubs and Hazel (Darley in Bloom) planted grasses.

Now we need plenty of sunshine and plenty of rain to make everything grow.
