Heritage Project - Beginnings
DARLEY IN BLOOM HERITAGE PROJECT

In the beginning.....

Following the theme of Local Roots, work continued on the Heritage Trail, and funding applications were submitted.

One of the group then became involved with a new local history group in the village, started by Age Concern North Yorkshire.  This attracted several older members of the community who were eager to share their memories and photographs of old Darley.  A scrapbook of these is now in Christ Church Community Centre.  However, a more substantial archive, that people could have in their homes was obviously needed.  So it was decided to include publication of a book of these photos in the bid for heritage funding.

At the end of 2008, the group learned that it has been successful in obtaining funds from two sources.  Awards for All has awarded a grant towards the whole project and Harrogate Borough Council Arts and Heritage Fund has also contributed to the scrapbook.  The money will be used to continue the research, collate all the photos and information, and produce the publications, to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors.

Sue Welch, the leader of the project says, “ It is vital that old photos and memories of the area are preserved, or our heritage will be lost.  Although I am new to the village, I have already been able to collect a wealth of fascinating information from several older residents, some of whom have lived in the village all their lives.  I really want to learn more.”     While the stock of photos is already large, Sue is always on the look out for more.  So, if you were once a Darley resident and have any old photos or memories you would like to share, or if you know of anyone who may be able to help, please get in touch with Sue on 01423 780970.

The leaflet and book will be launched at a Heritage Action Day to be held in Darley in the Autumn, when photos and work from the project will be displayed, together with information from other local heritage projects.  Visitors will then be able to purchase the publications, and learn about life in the Darley of yesteryear.

Look out for project updates as the work proceeds.
